Common Blogging Mistakes

January 15, 2020 By echerowebmaster Leave a Comment

Writing is easy. Writing for a website must be even easier. What’s there to it, anyway? All you have to do is type some words into a blog post and upload it to a website. It’s not as if anybody’s reading it anyway, right? If you’ve ever thought of any of those things about writing blog posts, there’s a lot you need to know!

At a glance, blogging is a simple task: think of a topic, write 300-500 words about that topic, and publish. But there’s a lot going on below the surface that most people don’t even realize! Here are some of the top blogging mistakes you may be making right now, and what to do about them.

Writing Like a Robot

Sometimes when people put pen to paper (or in this case, fingers to keyboard), what comes out can be quite stiff, overly formal- in a word, robotic. It can be difficult to write a blog post that flows naturally, like a real conversation, but that’s exactly what you should be doing. Our copywriters here at Echero are total pros at creating blog posts that have a lot of voice and personality, and using a conversational style to give the topic interest and depth. Next time you’re faced with creating a blog post, try to make it read like you’re just chatting with someone- you’ll be amazed at the difference!

Making a Topic Too Broad

If you are in charge of writing the blog posts for your company’s website, you’re hopefully churning out at least one post per week. That’s 52 posts a year! Despite the abundance and frequency of blog posts, however, it can be easy to fall into a trap where you try to include too much information about too many things in a single post. This can easily be avoided by narrowing down the topic (instead of “Everything You Wanted to Know About Widgets,” for example, try, “Top Three Reasons a Widget Can Help Your Business.”)

“Borrowing” From Other Blog Posts

We’re all inspired by one another to try new things or embrace new ideas, and there’s certainly no shame in looking at other sources to gain information about a topic. However, if you’re not citing your sources, or are simply copy/pasting another blog’s content into your own, you’re wading into plagiarism territory. Make sure to always cite any source, including other blogs, that you are using in your own posts, and include links to the source content whenever possible. If you’re feeling stuck for ideas, Echero’s team of content writing professionals is always here to create fresh, original blog post content for your website.
